Impulse Responses // December 2022

In early December 2022, my colleague Jak Delaney and I collected three impulse responses (IRs) from various locations on the UMiami Coral Gables campus. This was completed for a project in MMI220 Intro to Music Recording, instructed by Thomas Mitchell.

Two IRs were taken within the Clarke Recital Hall, our smallest on-campus venue, and one IR was taken inside a racquetball court within the UM Herbert Wellness Center.

All IRs were taken with two Lewitt 040 MATCH microphones in XY position. Sine sweeps were played from a JBL EON715 loudspeaker. The IRs were captured using Ableton’s IR Measurement Device, making the process incredibly easy.

One of the Clarke Hall IRs was captured in a closed side hallway. The space is known for its unique reverberant properties because of its odd dimensions— roughly 6 feet by 30 feet, capped with a remarkably high ceiling. This creates an interesting effect in the early reflections of noises in the space. The other Clarke Hall IR was taken from the front center of the stage in the hall.

The racquetball court IR can be heard on a drum bus in the video below. The parallel walls in the space, complimented with one entirely glass wall, make for a unique sound.

Please feel free to download and try out all three impulse responses from the link below.
